On Saturday, January 27th, the Fighting Scots men’s basketball team rolled past Beloit 86-62 in a critical win to maintain a three-way tie for second-place in the Midwest Conference.

Monmouth didn’t dominate early as the final score would indicate. In the first half, the Scots shot a mere 40% from the field, yet they found themselves ahead by taking care of the basketball and creating shot opportunities through crisp ball movement. Sophomore Justin Batterton would lead the way for Monmouth in the first-half off of four for four shooting from the field as the Scots would go into the halftime break with an eight-point lead making the score 35-27.

In the second half, the lead would open up as Monmouth lifted its shooting percentage to over 51% from the field while maintaining their active defense. That active defense would lead to six steals for the Scots which let their offense get out into the open court for easy scoring opportunities.

Freshman newcomer Stephon Bobbitt would ignite Monmouth’s offense as he shot five for five from the field in the second half to build up the lead. It was a balanced attack from the Scots as three players hit double-figure scoring, while six others contributed five or more points.

Assistant coach Caleb Batson had this to say after the game, “Defensively, offensively, we got it going. That was about the best our motion has looked in a while as far as cuts are concerned and things we’ve been working on in practice really translated to the game. We did a really good job tonight as far as a team, as a unit, moving the ball. Everybody was involved, and it was nice to get a win like that where everybody got a chance to see the floor too.”

Up next on the schedule, Monmouth will travel to De Pere, Wisconsin on Feb. 3rd to face off against conference-leading St. Norbert College.
