Men’s tennis begins season at Coe

February 9, 2018

This past weekend the men’s tennis team was back in action for the first time this season. The Scots began their season by traveling to Cedar Rapids, IA on Saturday for some nationally ranked competition.

The men’s first matchup of the day was against Coe College who is currently ranked 39th in the nation and eight in the region. In the doubles competitions, the Scots weren’t able to come away with a victory, but they fought hard and competed in each of them. Seniors Ronnie Griffin and Landon Walker narrowly fell short in their match 8-5. The Scots lost their other two doubles competitions by scores of 8-3 and 8-2.

In the singles competitions, senior Dylan Wong took Coe’s Brady Anderson who is ranked 19th in the country. Anderson took down Wong in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Senior Saxon Day and freshman Joseph Shie had the two closest singles matches as Day lost his two sets by a small margin of 4-6 and 5-7. Shie dominated the first set of his match 6-1 before dropping the next two sets 4-6 and 6-10.

Later in the day, the Scots faced off against UW-Lacrosse and once again the doubles matches were very close. Unfortunately, it was the same result against Lacrosse as it was against Coe. Griffin and Walker once again lost a close match 8-5 while the other two doubles teams lost 8-2 and 8-3.

The Scots, for the most part, came away with a couple points in each set of their singles matches but the closest they came to a match victory was freshman Zach Harris’ 2-6, 3-6 loss.

On February 10th the Fighting Scots will head to Moline to take on Luther College and Augustana College.
