Scots take down Lady Blues at home

February 16, 2018

On February 13th, the Fighting Scots’ women’s basketball team upset Illinois College with an 83-71 win, and in the process, eliminated the Lady Blues from qualifying for the Midwest Conference tournament.

It was a competitive game from tip-off as Illinois College and Monmouth College exchanged the lead throughout the opening quarter. Illinois College would lead by as many as five points in the first quarter before the Scots closed out the frame with back to back layups by Maddie Dohleman and Carley Turnbull to tie things up at 20.

The second quarter would play out to be a period of runs, as the Lady Blues opened the quarter on an eight to three run to take the lead. The Scots would respond though, with a seven to zero run to tie the score at 33 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Illinois College would rattle off six unanswered points taking a 39-33 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, it was an entirely different game as Monmouth seized the momentum right out of the break. On the Scots’ first possession of the third quarter, Carley Turnbull would nail a three-point basket to get the offense rolling. The Scots would hit all five of their free throws in the quarter as well as connecting on three three-pointers to turn a six-point deficit to a seven-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Illinois College managed to make two baskets within the first minute of the fourth quarter, cutting the Scots lead down to three points with just over nine minutes remaining in the game. Monmouth responded with a nine to one run over the next two minutes to push the lead back to double figures, dousing any momentum the Lady Blues had built.

The Scots look to take this two-game win streak and make it three as they travel to Mount Vernon, IA on February 17th, to take on conference-leading Cornell College in their final game of the season.
