Lacrosse takes down Carroll in season opener

February 23, 2018

The Fighting Scots men’s lacrosse team was in action for the first time this season on February 17th. They traveled up north to Waukesha, WI to take on Carroll University.

The Scots got off to a hot start as freshman Braden Cross put Monmouth up 1-0 just 22 seconds into the game. Carroll would go on a 3-0 run over the next eight minutes as they looked to take a commanding lead going into the second quarter. Jeff Knapp foiled those plans though as he netted his first goal of the season with a little over two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The first seven minutes of the quarter so no scoring action, but Thomas Van Alstine and Croy Seagren both scored within 43 seconds of each other to give the Scots a one-goal lead. Each team would score once more before halftime as Monmouth lead 5-4 heading into the second half.

Monmouth’s offense would stall for the majority of the third quarter, but Van Alstine and freshman Mitch Perez would connect on two goals late in the quarter. The Scots would take a 7-6 lead into the final quarter, looking for a win to start the season.

Van Alstine and Perez’s strong third quarter rolled over into the fourth. Van Alstine would complete his hat trick for the game as he scored his third goal four and a half minutes into the final frame. Less than four minutes later Perez netted his second goal of the game to give the Scots a three-goal lead.

Seagren added another goal for the Scots to push their lead to four. Knapp would then complete the Scots’ scoring with a little over five minutes remaining in the game. His final goal also gave him a hat track. The Pioneers would get a couple late-game goals, but the Fighting Scots came away with the 11-8 victory.

The men will have two weeks to improve even more before their next game. The Scots will have their home opener on March 3rd against Hope College.
