On Saturday, March 17th, the Marian University Sabres visited Monmouth for a conference game. The Marian University men’s lacrosse program is a first year program and had a very skilled inaugural team. As a second-year team with a new coach, the Scots battled hard and came out with a 9-8 victory in overtime.

The Sabres punched in a quick goal at the start of the game but were quickly followed by two goals from senior Jerry Ivey, one from sophomore Thomas Van Alstine, and another from freshman Jeff Knapp. The Sabres then punched one more goal in to tie the game at 4-4 with 2:26 left in the first half, which Knapp answered immediately with a goal right off of the face-off win just seven seconds later. The Sabres came back with one more goal before the half, sending the game tied 5-5 at halftime.

Marian University came out of halftime hot and scored two back to back goals, though it didn’t take long for sophomore Croy Seagren to respond and put his first point of the day on the board. The Sabres scored one more time, making the score 8-6, just before going double man down for slashing and an illegal push. Knapp quickly responded just a few seconds into the penalties with his third goal of the day, making the score 8-7 with 11:30 left in the 4th quarter.

With 9:28 left in the game, freshman Mitch Perez assisted Van Alstine for his second goal of the day, tying it up at 8-8. Thanks to the Scots’ stellar sophomore defense, led by captain Shane Herkert and goalie Chase Cranford, no more goals were scored by the Sabres and the clock hit 0:00. Knapp won the overtime face-off and got the ball down to the offense. With less than a minute into overtime, offensive captain Van Alstine scored the game-winning point with an impressive dunk on the crease.

The Scots will travel to Minnesota this weekend to play non-conference games against the University of Northwestern in St. Paul and North Central University in Minneapolis. They will be back at home on April 4th to play the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 PM.
