Scots open conference at Cornell

March 23, 2018

The Fighting Scots women’s lacrosse team traveled to Mount Vernon, IA this past Wednesday to take on Cornell College. The matchup against the Rams was the first conference game of the season for Monmouth.

Cornell would strike first with a goal less than a minute into the game to put them up 1-0. The Scots would quickly respond with two goals by Kara-Jade Gordon in a twenty-second span to give Monmouth the upper hand.

Three minutes later the Rams would tie the game up at 2-2 with a little less than 24 and a half minutes to play in the first half. The score would stay even for nearly fourteen minutes as both defenses clamped down.

With 10:33 to play in the half the Rams would take a 3-2 lead over the Fighting Scots. Monmouth would once again respond with another goal by Gordon to even things up for the third time. Cornell would score once more before halftime, but the Scots were still well within striking distance.

The first five minutes of the second half so four goals scored. Unfortunately, the Rams scored three of those goals to take a 7-4 lead. Senior Tiana Cintron would score her first goal of the game to keep the Scots close.

Cornell added two more goals in the next six minutes to increase their lead to five. The Scots would need to work fast if they wanted a chance to comeback. Kara-Jade Gordon would add three second-half goals to go along with her three first-half goals, but Cornell would score four more times before the game came to a conclusion.

Monmouth fought hard but fell to Cornell 13-7 in their first conference game of the season. The team’s next game will be an away matchup this Saturday against Loras College.
