Women’s lacrosse hosts Wartburg

April 6, 2018

The Monmouth College women’s lacrosse team hosted the Wartburg College Knights this past Saturday. It was a pretty day at April Zorn Memorial Stadium for this conference matchup. The Scots battled hard but just couldn’t quite catch up.

The Scots played good defense coming out of the game for nearly a three-minute span. The Knights then went on a 3 goal run over the next minute and a half. Sophomore captain Kara-Jade Gordon, from Nashville, TN, answered just two minutes later with her first goal of the day. The Knights went on a two-goal run before Gordon stopped them once more with her second goal of the day. This goal was impressively scored while they were one man down with, Junior, Lexi Tibbs in the penalty box with a yellow card. The Knights scored a few more goals before Tibbs stopped that with her own powerful shot and goal. After another rally by the Knights, Tibbs scored her second goal to end the first half. Gordon felt very confident ending this half and she stated “I felt like we had some momentum ending the half and the girls seemed focused. I thought we could turn this game around.”

With an attempt to turn this 9-4 game around, Gordon came out of the second half very hot and punched in her third goal, giving herself a hat trick for the day. Wartburg fought hard and stole one more goal just a few minutes later. After a 12-minute scoring drought, Gordon punched in her fourth and final goal of the day. Wartburg then went on a run and the Scots finished the game with a 16-6 loss.

The women do not have hopes of letting a loss like this determine the rest of their season. They are back, hard at work, preparing for their home game against Aurora University at 1 PM this Saturday. Junior Kaelin Sommer expressed her excitement for this game and said that “the team is shaking off the Wartburg game and is looking forward to playing another conference game against Aurora.”
