After four straight cancellations, the Fighting Scots baseball team was finally back in action. Monmouth traveled to Iowa Wesleyan University this past Wednesday to take on the Tigers in a doubleheader.

In the first matchup, Monmouth was able to get into the scoring column first. In the second inning, the Scots came away with three hits, including two doubles, and three runs.

The Scots were able to bust the game open in the top of the third. After a single and double to start the inning, sophomore Mike Dato brought home three runs with a homer to left center. Monmouth would get five more hits in the inning and three more runs would cross the plate to give them a commanding 9-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Harry Sanchez extended the Scots lead to eleven with a two-run home run. Iowa Wesleyan would score one run in the bottom of the inning but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

Starting pitcher Asa Stevenson was lights out on the mound, allowing one hit and zero runs through five innings. Great hitting mixed with unstoppable pitching lead the Fighting Scots to an 11-1 game one victory.

Game two was more of the same for the Scots on the offensive end. In the second inning, Monmouth was able to plate three runs thanks to three hits and an Iowa Wesleyan error. The Tigers would score two in the bottom of the half of the inning to keep themselves within striking distance.

In the top of the fifth, Monmouth was able to leave no doubt who was going to win the game. Iowa Wesleyan committed four errors in the inning and the Scots had six hits. By the end of the inning, the Fighting Scots were up 13-2 on the Tigers.

Junior Ridge Greenman came away with his second win of the season. Greenman pitched five innings, allowing only five hits and two runs while striking out four. Monmouth came away with the sweep as they took game two 15-7.

The Fighting Scots will head to Grinnell, Iowa this Sunday for a doubleheader against the Pioneers. First pitch will be at 1:00 P.M.
