Men’s tennis battles at Lake Forest

April 16, 2018

The Fighting Scots’ men’s tennis team had two away matches this week. Monmouth’s first match of the week came against Lake Forest College on April 8th as the Scots lost a 4-5 nailbiter. Two days later on April 10th Monmouth traveled down to Illinois College. The Fighting Scots also lost a close game against the Blueboys 3-6.

Against Lake Forest the Scots were able to win the doubles match, losing the other two by a small margin of 4-8, 5-8. Freshmen Zach Harris and Joseph Shie were able to defeat their opponents 8-3 to keep the Scots within striking distance as they headed to the singles competition.

Shie and Harris both had strong singles matches as well. Shie defeated his Lake Forest opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Harris dominated in his singles in his singles match and won 6-2, 6-0.

Senior Paulo Pliego also won his singles match, easily winning the first set 6-0. Pliego had a challenge in the second set though but was able to squeak by with a 7-5 victory.

Two other Fighting Scots won the first set of their singles competition but ended up falling to their opponents in three sets. Monmouth would lose a close one to Lake Forest 4-5.

The Scots were back in action two days later at Illinois College. In the doubles competition, the Blueboys were able to defeat Monmouth in all three matches. The Scots were narrowly beaten in all three 8-10, 5-8, 7-9.

Monmouth had some better luck in the singles competition as Zach Harris and Joseph Shie carried over their great performances from the Lake Forest match to this match as well. Harris once again dominated his singles opponent, winning 6-0, 6-2. Shie only allowed one point in his two-set victory, coming away with a 6-1, 6-0 win as well.

Senior Dylan Wong had the other Scots victory on the day, as he was triumphant in his singles match 6-0, 6-1. Those were the only three victories Monmouth would have as they fell short against Illinois College 3-6.

The Fighting Scots will be back in action this Sunday as they take on two conference opponents. Monmouth will face Lawrence University and St. Norbert College as they look to move to 3-2 in conference play.
