Scots primed for final tournament

The women’s water polo team traveled south to McKendree University this past weekend for three games. On Saturday, the Fighting Scots would face Gannon University and Mercyhurst University. On Sunday, Monmouth would take on the host team, McKendree University, to end their weekend.

In their first game of the weekend, the Fighting Scots fell behind 4-0 early but rallied to even things at 4-4 going into the second quarter. Monmouth would score the lone goal of the second quarter, taking a 5-4 lead into halftime

The Fighting Scots’ defense would not hold up in the second half as the Golden Knights would go on an 8-1 run to end the game. Monmouth would fall to Gannon 12-6 to begin their weekend.

The Scots looked to end Saturday with a 1-1 tournament record as they got set to face Mercyhurst University. Monmouth got off to a strong start on both ends as Brenna Bowers and Rachel Unger each scored in the first quarter.

Becca Dabrowski would score her first goal of the game in the second quarter, but the Lakers would three of their own. The Fighting Scots went into halftime down 5-3.

In the second half, Emily Mathews would score her fourth goal of the tournament, but Mercyhurst began to lock in on offense and three goals in the third quarter along with three more in the fourth. The Fighting Scots would take their second straight loss, losing to Mercyhurst 11-4.
On Sunday, Monmouth would play their final game of the tournament against McKendree University. The Bearcats were dominant on both ends in their game against Monmouth, outscoring the Fighting Scots 9-0 in the first half.

In the second half, the Fighting Scots would improve on both offense and defense. They limited the Bearcats to three goals in the half while Becca Dabrowski was able to score two goals to get Monmouth on the board. McKendree ended up coming away with the victory 12-2.
The women are back in action this weekend in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Scots will compete on Saturday and Sunday to end their season.
