Baseball wins two against Grinnell

April 20, 2018

On Tuesday afternoon, the Fighting Scots’ baseball team took on Grinnell College for a mid-week doubleheader. Monmouth came away with two huge conference victories.

In game one, Grinnell got off to a hot start and was leading 4-0 after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Bryson Sheppard started off the inning with a walk and then Harry Sanchez drove in the Scots first run of the game with a triple. Monmouth would string together five more hits and six more runs to take a commanding 7-4 lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Scots hit two singles, a double, and a triple. Monmouth added five runs in the inning to put the game all but out of reach. The Pioneers would add a run in the bottom of the 8th, but Monmouth would end up with the 13-5 win.

The second game of the doubleheader was evenly matched for a majority of the game. Once again, Grinnell would strike first in the bottom of the third and take a 1-0 lead.

The Scots would finally get on the board in the top of the fifth. After two hits and an intentional walk, senior Grant Myers came up to bat and cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field. Monmouth now held a 4-1 advantage.

Monmouth would add a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to increase their lead to five runs. Despite the Pioneers getting eight hits compared to the Scots seven, Monmouth came away with a 6-1 victory.

With two wins against Grinnell, the Scots moved to 5-3 in conference play. Monmouth will head up to Wisconsin this weekend for the Midwest Conference Crossover. The Fighting Scots will take on St. Norbert College and Lawrence University on Saturday. On Sunday, they will face off against Beloit College and Ripon College.
