The men’s tennis team took on two conference opponents this past Sunday. The Fighting Scots faced off against St. Norbert College at 9 a.m. and then turned around and played Lawrence University at noon.

Against St. Norbert, Monmouth got off to a hot start in the doubles competition. The two duo’s that are made up of the four seniors on the team lead the day. Dylan Wong and Landon Walker were able to defeat their opposition 8-5, while Paulo Pliego and Saxon Day handled their Green Knight adversaries 8-3.

Monmouth also dominated the singles competition as well, only losing one out of the six matches. Walker had the toughest battle, winning his three-set match by a narrow margin of 7-6, 2-6, 12-10. Freshman Joseph Shie also had a close singles match but eventually came out on top 6-4, 7-5.

The Green Knights were no contest for the other three Fight Scot victors, Dylan Wong, Paulo Pliego, and Saxon Day. Monmouth ended up defeating St. Norbert 7-2.

The Fighting Scots’ next match came against Lawrence University. Just like against the Green Knights, Monmouth jumped on the Vikings in the doubles competition.

Day and Pliego were able to come away with their second doubles match win of the day, winning 8-5. Freshmen Joseph Shie and Zach Harris also won their match 8-3 to give the Scots control going into the singles competition.

Unfortunately, Lawrence University won four out of five singles matches to defeat Monmouth. Shie and Day were the two Scots to get match victories in singles. Shie only allowed two points total as he was victorious 6-1, 6-1. Day won his first set 6-2 and then shut out his opponent 6-0 in the second set. Lawrence would narrowly beat Monmouth 5-4.

Monmouth’s next two matches are this upcoming Saturday and Sunday in Iowa. On Saturday, the Scots will take on Cornell College and then head to Grinnell College for a Sunday morning match against the Pioneers.
