Baseball dominates Lawrence 14-3

April 27, 2018

Monmouth finished out the weekend’s games with a 14-3 win over Lawrence University.

Starting pitcher Connor McDonald took the mound for the Scots fanning six innings. In the first inning, McDonald struck out three batters, keeping runners on first and third from scoring. In the bottom half of the first, Bryson Sheppard and Harry Sanchez hit a pair of two out singles to put the Scots up 2-0.

In the second, McDonald continued the hot start striking out two more before finishing the side with a pop out by Vikings infielder Anthony Ortiz. Monmouth tallied two more runs in the bottom of the second. The first came off a double-play that Jake Starkey hit into, scoring Tyler Ulfig from third. The next at bat, Matt Temaner doubled allowing Dalton Phillips to cross home plate for a 4-0 lead.

The third inning is where the Scots’ offense significantly added to their lead. A string of three runs was scored off a pair of singles and an error as Monmouth went up 6-0. But their work for the inning was not finished as Christian Lett hit a three-run homer to left field to up the lead 9-0.

In the fifth inning, Scots’ first baseman Grant Myers smashed a second three-run homer of the day to make the score 14-0. McDonald pitched six scoreless innings, before being replaced by Josh Fuchs in the top of the seventh.

The Vikings took advantage of the pitching change scoring three runs in the final inning to avoid the shutout.

Connor McDonald improved to 2-0 on the season as the Scots wrapped up a weekend of doubleheaders with a 14-3 win.

Monmouth improved to 18-10-1 on the season with a 7-5 record in Midwest Conference play. The Scots currently hold the second spot in the South Division, a half-game ahead of Cornell College. Their next contest is a doubleheader on April 28 against Illinois College with games scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Glasgow Field.
