April 27, 2018

The men’s tennis team was back in action this past weekend with two conference matchups against Cornell College and Grinnell College. With their 6-3 win against Cornell College, the Scots locked up a spot in the men’s team conference championships on April 27-29.

In the matchup with the Rams, Monmouth took control early, winning two of the three doubles competitions. Seniors Saxon Day and Paulo Pliego won a close one in their match, narrowly escaping with a 9-7 victory. Freshmen Joseph Shie and Zach Harris dominated their match, never giving up a point and coming away with an 8-0 victory.

The Fighting Scots wrapped up the team victory with four wins in the singles matches. The four doubles victors all won their singles competitions to help the Scots defeat Cornell.

Shie had little trouble in the first set of his singles match, winning 6-3. His competitor was a little bit stronger in the second set, but Shie came away with another set victory, winning 7-5 to wrap up his day.

Pliego and his Cornell contender battled it out in set one, but Paulo ended up with a 6-4 win. He then finished the match off with a 6-1 set two victory.

Day had no trouble with his challenger, defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Harris wrapped up the Scots victories with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

After their win against Cornell, Monmouth headed to Grinnell College for a Sunday morning matchup with the Pioneers. The Scots would lose to the conference’s best team 0-9 to end their regular season.

Monmouth will have their chance for revenge this weekend. The number four seed Fighting Scots will face Grinnell on Friday, April 27. The Midwest Conference Championships will be played in Madison, Wisconsin from April 27-29.
